Birthday Wishes

My grandmother turned 90 yrs old yesterday. We celebrated on a small scale and little does she know that today holds a surprise party. Well I take that back. My grandmother is sharp minded and we think she suspects there's a party in the works.
She enjoyed the small scale party and here she is holding her great-great granddaughter, MC.

My grandmother is the oldest of 4 children. I am fascinated with the story of her life. She was born to a young farming couple in the Appalachian mountains on a snowy blizzard day. Her mother almost died during the birth and was transported 10 miles by horse and sled to the nearest dr in town. Due to my great grandmother's grave condition the dr had no time to care for my grandmother and advised the midwife to wrap the baby and lay her beside the dog in a bed to keep her warm. Both of them survived and my great-grandmother lived to be 91 yrs old.
At the age of 7 yrs. my grandmother suffered the loss of her youngest 2 yr old sister to illness and 6 months later lost her father to TB.

She quit high school in her junior year and landed a job as a bank teller. Her math skills are sharp and believe me, she can beat anyone at a game of Dominoes 15's.
She met my grandfather and married at the age 18. One year later my mother was born. Six years later she again suffered loss when her second child (a boy) died at the age of 3 months.

My grandfather was called to service during WW2 and she volunteered her services on the homefront while working and raising her daughter.
She is a survivor of the Great Depression. At one point they closed their house and she and my mother moved in with her mother and my grandfather moved in with his parents. When asked why they didn't move in together to one house or the other her words are, " neither family could afford or house all of 3 of us and that's just the way things were, you did what you had to do." She remains politically active and has given quite a few warnings concerning our present government. I've learned to listen to the wise words of the elderly. They're no fools.

I spent weekends with my grandparents and thought it was wonderful when I could get "gussied-up" and go into town with them. Back then there were many specialty (quality) clothing stores in our downtown area and one had a tea room. She took me to lunch there many times and you can only imagine a wide eyed 7 yr old girl marveling over the dainty china tea cups, the little sandwiches and special desserts.

My grandmother has 1 daughter, 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. She has spunk and if she thinks she's being bossed around she'll inform the self-designated bossy one to "Sit down. Who do you think I am? I'm certainly not an old woman." She still lives in her home with her little dog, Buffy and she remains active in her church and volunteers at our local fire department.

She has called me every year on my birthday to sing Happy Birthday. This year I surprised her by calling and singing Happy Birthday in my best singing voice (which is never good). We had a good laugh.

Happy Birthday Mom-mom!

Surprise!!!!!

Finally! It's opening day. Not really. We opened the box a few days ago but I haven't had time to post. We're packing the new college freshman. But that's for a later post.

Chan sent the package to DD and me, so I not so patiently waited to open it with her.

First was the little treat package for Mr. Bettis & Co from the fur-girls.
It said, " For Mr. B & the fur girls at our house! Slobbery kisses
Sissy & Gretchen"
Aren't they just the sweeteset fur girls? Oh, you too, Chan :).
Mr. B & Co sends slobbery kisses right back.

Next were these wonderful tea mugs from Aladdin. We've never seen anything like them. I told the DD she had first choice in color and she chose the purple one. She drinks a lot of tea and as she put it, "this will be perfect when I'm running to class."

The lid comes off to reveal where to put the tea leaves. The lever at the bottom drops it into the hot water of the mug to be brewed. This is absolutely ingenious. We love it, Chan.

She dove into the box to find boxes and tins of flavored teas. Scrumptous teas like Blueberry, Pineapple Mango, Twinings assortment, Pink Lady Green, Golden Breakfast and many more. Every one of them drew oooohhhhhs and aaaaahhhhhhs from us as we pulled them from the package.
The theme of the gift is to have a mother/daughter tea party although we do not live close, Chan is going to us at our tea party. Feel free to grab a cup of your favorite beverage and join us.
There was a beautiful card handmade by Chan which is packed and moving with the DD. She wants to mount it on her dorm wall.

Chan, this is a very thoughtful gift and we are enjoying it immensely. Thank you so very much! HUGS:)

One man's trash is another.......

I hope everyone had a wonderful July 4th holiday. It feels a lot like fall around here with temps in the 70's during the day and low 50's at night.

I've been quiet for a few days. Okay, more like a week or so. There are those out there who cannot believe that I'm quiet. LOL I have some personal stuff going on and I have chosen to be mum about it on here. However you can email me, if you like.

Now onto some fun............

We decided to go on an "adventure." Our church has a thrift shop that is open every Wednesday. The proceeds go into a community mission to help those in need locally.

I found some nice goodies today at the thrift shop. I love this small bowl and it was only $1.00. Looks lovely on my antique cookstove.

My grandmother had a set of dishes with this very design so of course I had to buy it. It had a $2.00 price tag so cha-ching, it's mine.

I fell in love with this candy dish. Look at the sculpted flowers. Aren't they gorgeous? There's a small chip on the pink rose but that didn't stop me from the $1.50 purchase price. The stamp on the bottom says Italy.

I just can't stop admiring this dish. The colors are beautiful and ya'll know I like color:).

Then this little bone china tea cup from England was screaming to come home with me. The price? 75 cents. The stamp on the bottom says Salisbury with a handpainted gold number.

Anita mentioned making a dusting cloth thingy. We found the pattern and now Chan is in on the action. Feel free to join us to make a re-usable dusting thingy (it fits on those swiffer/biffer handles).

It's a crochet project and I have to make something to dust my new finds. These goodies are HIGH above Mr. Bettis & Co. Now about those cats..................
